Julia Lindsay is a visual artist and arts administrator living and working in Toronto. Her work focuses on themes of the sublime, synchronicities, antiquity, archetypes, and dream study. Her background in both classics and archaeology informs her practice through her love of narratives and archetypes that carry throughout history in the form of folklore, myths, and material history.
These two paintings explore the experience of sublimity in nature, drawing from memories of awe-inspiring encounters in the natural world. Intended to evoke a fleeting recollection, the forms are intentionally hazy and indistinct, with elements such as stars and waterfalls reconfigured into gestural marks that convey the sensation of the experience rather than its literal reality..
